Tap to the beat:

How to find a song's BPM

BPM stands for beats per minute, the number that tells you how fast a song goes. To find it with this free tap tempo tool, play the track and tap the button on every beat: after a few taps it averages your timing and shows the song's tempo. The more beats you tap, the steadier the reading gets, so keep tapping along for a couple of bars.

Once you have the number you can set a metronome to it, count the band in or note it next to the song so everyone plays it at the same speed. The tool runs in your browser with nothing to download or register, and you can tap with the button or the space bar, whichever feels natural.

Frequently asked questions

What is BPM?
BPM stands for beats per minute: the number that says how fast a song goes. 60 BPM is one beat a second; most pop songs sit between 100 and 130, ballads around 70-90, and faster rock tracks at 140 and up. Agreeing on the same BPM as a band is the simplest way to keep a rehearsal from drifting: settle a song's tempo once, note it down, and every rehearsal starts from the same place.
How many taps do I need to find the tempo?
A number appears from the second tap onwards, but eight to ten gives you something far more reliable: the tool averages the gaps between your taps, so the more you give it, the less a single stray tap matters. Tap along with the kick drum while the track plays rather than counting bars. Leave a gap longer than two seconds and the run resets itself, so your next tap starts fresh.
What do I do with the BPM I've found?
Three common uses. Set a metronome to that number and rehearse to it, so the song stays at one speed from start to finish. Use it as the reference when you count the band in. And note it next to the song, so you're not hunting for the tempo again next rehearsal. In BandUp the tempo you save with a song in your repertoire stays there, so the whole band sees the same number.

Get the whole band on the same plan

You found the tempo for one song, but a set is a dozen of them in a row. In BandUp a setlist holds that running order and stays synced for everyone live, so the whole band knows what is next and counts the next song in together instead of guessing.
