How to read a piano chord
A piano chord diagram shows part of a keyboard: white and black keys. The highlighted keys are the notes that make up the chord, and pressing them together sounds the chord, while the key with the contrast outline is the root. The letters above the diagram (like C E G) are the names of those notes. On piano a chord is a set of notes rather than a finger shape like on guitar, so seeing which keys play together is the fastest way to learn it.
Pick the root note and the chord type above (major, minor, 7, m7, maj7 and sus, dim, aug and add9 too), and the diagram highlights which keys to press in root position and spells the notes correctly. Black-key roots are mostly written as flats (Eb, Ab, Bb), as is common on piano, so the chord reads cleanly. Bring the chord to your band and keyboard, guitar and bass all meet on the same notes.
